On Analogues of the Church-Turing Thesis in Algorithmic Randomness
نویسنده
چکیده
In this article, I consider the status of several statements analogous to the ChurchTuring thesis that assert that some definition of algorithmic randomness captures the intuitive conception of randomness. I argue that we should not only reject the theses that have appeared in the algorithmic randomness literature, but more generally that we ought not evaluate the adequacy of a definition of randomness on the basis of whether it captures the so-called intuitive conception of randomness to begin with. Instead, I argue that a more promising alternative is to evaluate the adequacy of a definition of randomness on the basis of whether it captures what I refer to as a “notion of almost everywhere typicality.” In support of my main claims, I will appeal to recent work in showing the connection between definitions of algorithmic randomness and certain “almost everywhere” theorems from classical mathematics.

Computability theory, algorithmic randomness and Turing's anticipation
This article looks at the applications of Turing’s Legacy in computation, particularly to the theory of algorithmic randomness, where classical mathematical concepts such as measure could be made computational. It also traces Turing’s anticipation of this theory in an early manuscript.
متن کاملDid Church and Turing Have a Thesis about Machines ?
This article draws attention to a central dispute in the interpretation of Church’s Thesis. More precisely, we are concerned with the Church-Turing thesis, as it emerged in 1936 when Church endorsed Turing’s characterization of the concept of effective calculability. (The article by Sieg in this volume details this history. It is valuable also to note from Krajewski, also in this volume, that t...
متن کاملExtending and interpreting Post's programme
Computability theory concerns information with a causal – typically algorithmic – structure. As such, it provides a schematic analysis of many naturally occurring situations. Emil Post was the first to focus on the close relationship between information, coded as real numbers, and its algorithmic infrastructure. Having characterised the close connection between the quantifier type of a real and...
متن کاملInteraction, Computability, and Church’s Thesis
This article formalizes the claim that interactive finite computing agents are more expressive than Turing machines. The impact of models of interaction on Church’s thesis and Godel’s incompleteness result is explored. The evolution from algorithmic to interactive models of computation in computer architecture, software engineering, and AI is considered in a final section.
متن کاملAn All-or-Nothing Flavor to the Church-Turing Hypothesis
Landauer’s principle claims that “Information is Physical.” It is not surprising that its conceptual antithesis, Wheeler’s “It from Bit,” has been more popular among computer scientists — in the form of the Church-Turing hypothesis: All natural processes can be computed by a universal Turing machine; physical laws then become descriptions of subsets of observable, as opposed to merely possible,...
